From the first moments of track one, I feel that I am somewhere, though I know that the pieces and recordings have been made in several different countries. But this place feels singular, not multiple. What can it be but a place in the imagination? Virtual meetings have become a part of real life. Here they are initially anonymous, taking place in sound only, after each participant has made all their decisions. There are no reactions, only adjacencies and transparencies.
In my contact with the participants, I found only a bare shared understanding of the project. The sequence of events and the rules were agreed upon, but they were understood and pursued in at least six unique ways.
Are the coherences of these tracks serendipitous? I don’t think so. Each person’s involvement is aligned with a deeply held (and perhaps felt) set of patterns and practices. Separately, they arrive at an experience to be shared later, and in equal measure by you. (texts by Jennie Gottschalk)
